Åbenlys is a Danish brand offering tealights and glass candles you can light with a clean conscience. Made from soy wax, their candles and lights are better for the environment and are free of chemicals and perfume.
Åbenlys is a Danish word that translates to “obvious” because it is obvious that it should be possible to bring Danish hygge into your home without compromising on our health and the environment.
This brings us to the next translation; hygge. Hygge is a Danish word and is notorious for being difficult to translate. Hygge is a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being. At Åbenlys this happens when you light a candle and it should be possible to do so sustainably.
The woman behind Åbenlys is Mathea and her ambition is to bring sustainable hygge into the homes of Danes.
Åbenlys adds a whole new dimension to the Danish concept “hygge”. Hygge is often associated with lighting candles and enjoying the moment.
Åbenlys believes that sustainability should not be compromised with hygge. Therefore, they have created 100% CO2 Neutral candle lights which are as good for our health, as it is for the environment.
Åbenlys tea lights and glass candles are made of 100% plant-based soy wax which is both renewable and a CO2 neutral resource. The soy wax is GMO-free, fully traceable, and Pro Terra Certified. The Wicks are 100% cotton, OEKO-TEX 100 certified, and the containers are made of recycled glass and plastic.
Åbenlys and all its business is centred around a wish to provide and give homes hygge while valuing sustainability at its highest.
Hygge is home and it is a huge contributor to giving life that little dose of contentment every single day. For Åbenlys, this starts with lighting a candle.
The purchase of tealights and candles at Åbenlys is a direct contribution to mother earth and each purchase is a sustainable choice that helps the future. This even carries through to the very end as packaging at Åbenly is from recycled materials and wrappings that are re-used to package shipments in.
As a Copenhagen based platform, we absolutely love “hygge” at The Comarché. Åbenlys gives us the opportunity to light up the cold winter months as well as our long summer nights with sustainable candles. All candles are CO2 neutral and made from soya wax, making them extremely long-lasting as well as eco friendly. Who said “hygge” couldn't be eco friendly?
OEKO-TEX is an international association that tests for harmful substances in the various stages of textile production. It has two certification labels; the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and the Oeko-Tex Standard 1000.
The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is a global uniform testing and certification system for textile raw materials, intermediate and end products at all stages of production. Therefore, STANDARD 100 can be considered both a global health and environmental certificate
The Oeko-Tex Standard 1000 is a testing, auditing and certification system for environmentally friendly production sites throughout the textile processing chain.
The ProTerra Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that advances and promotes sustainability at all levels of the feed and food production system. It is a commitment to full transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain. It was made based on the concern for the potential detrimental impact of herbicide-resistant, genetically modified crops on ecosystems and biodiversity. ProTerra is an independent third-party certification that ensures high quality supplies of crops, food, and feed, that are independently certified as Non-GMO and produced with improved sustainability.
The Design Phase is a crucial part of determining a product’s sustainable capabilities. We’ve chosen to highlight a few genius steps that enable a sustainable product right from the beginning.
The materials used for a certain product and how these materials come to life are of crucial importance to the sustainable capabilities we seek in products.
This step relates to the transportation of the raw materials from when they are first obtained (harvested etc.) to the production site. Obviously, the closer to the production site, the better.
Obviously, the production of a certain product has an impact on the overall level of sustainability. Luckily, many manufacturers have now taken steps towards more sustainable production methods.
How a brand chooses to package its products will have a significant influence of the carbon impact from packaging and transportation.
This step relates to the distribution of products when they have been produced. Obviously, the closer to the brand’s warehouse, the better.
How you choose to use and take care of a product has a bigger impact than you think. Just think about how much longer a shirt lasts if it has been washed in the right way.
At this step, there is no way out and we have to find some way of discarding our product. How we discard a product will significantly influence the opportunity of reusing materials used.
