About Appearance

Appearance is founded by two ambitious Danish entrepreneurs who wants to help men dress like the best version of themselves. The duo saw that expectations on how men should dress for business were no longer dictated by stringent norms. Therefore, they seized the opportunity to celebrate formal wear by making it informal, and that was the birth of Appearance. Today’s stereotypical businessman should have the possibility to dress in timeless, durable classics that outlive simple trends. Appearance lives up to this self-proclaimed mission by creating pieces for the everyday formal: where business meets casual and becomes business casual.

 

The Danish company makes clothes for the everyday man and believes that clothes should be made to last and of a certain quality. All their garments are therefore created with the underlying vision that clothes should be worn season after season, year after year. Appearance takes great care and pride in partnering with the right factories and selecting materials that prolong the life of each garment. The same commitment is put into the design of their products. The company rejects the fashion industry’s “take, make, waste” tendencies and instead produces products that are of excellent quality and can be used both now and later. Appearance calls it the Everyday Formal. A devotion to bridge casual and business for all men searching for a capsule, long-lasting wardrobe.

Careful attention to creating great quality products is the cornerstone of this Danish menswear brand. Appearance’s goal is to make long-lasting products for the everyday man. The company invites the modern man to shop with intention and a conscious mindset. Appearance has an uncompromising approach when sourcing materials, creating designs for their products and choosing partners. The approach puts responsible decision-making at the center of their business.

 

Transparency

Certified materials and natural materials was the only right way to go when choosing materials and partner factories for Appearance. To ensure that this would be the case, Appearance made sure to follow the path that would allow for traceability and openness about their business. The brand follows a responsible internal code of conduct that encompasses the complex supply chain of products, processes and suppliers. This includes an active commitment to the principles of the ILO, the International Labor Organization, and conscious decision-making when choosing business partnerships. In extension, Appearance works with GOTS-certified factories in Portugal. A certification that is recognized as the leading processing standard for organic textiles. This means Appearance can rest easy knowing that production processes are closely monitored. In fact, Appearance further cements their commitment by monitoring all activities they are involved in. The brand provides proof of commitment to social and environmental responsibility through certifications such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and Step. As a result, Appearance’s products are produced at certified factories or with certified materials. For example, the certifications of Appearance’s cotton products span from OCS and BCI to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and GOTS.

Reduced waste and use of chemicals in production

There are many reasons why working with GOTS certified factories is a better alternative. The factories show an outstanding commitment to doing better for the environment by reducing waste through treatment of wastewater and recycling of residual production. There is considerable focus on energy-saving measures as well as the use of non-harmful chemicals in the production of the cotton textiles. This makes GOTS certified factories a favourable choice of partner for Appearance. Besides Appearance’s cotton textiles, the brand also produces designs in TENCEL™ Lyocell, Merino Wool and Alpaca. All materials that are better for the environment due to their durable qualities and minimal strain on nature from beginning to end. In summary, Appearance takes a strategic approach to procurement and believe that continuous support of technologies that enable reductions where technologically and economically viable is the future.

The Design Phase is a crucial part of determining a product’s sustainable capabilities. We’ve chosen to highlight a few genius steps that enable a sustainable product right from the beginning.

    Material & Material Extraction

    The materials used for a certain product and how these materials come to life are of crucial importance to the sustainable capabilities we seek in products.

      Transportation of Materials

      This step relates to the transportation of the raw materials from when they are first obtained (harvested etc.) to the production site. Obviously, the closer to the production site, the better.

        Production

        Obviously, the production of a certain product has an impact on the overall level of sustainability. Luckily, many manufacturers have now taken steps towards more sustainable production methods.

          Packaging

          How a brand chooses to package its products will have a significant influence of the carbon impact from packaging and transportation.

            Distribution

            This step relates to the distribution of products when they have been produced. Obviously, the closer to the brand’s warehouse, the better.

              Usage

              How you choose to use and take care of a product has a bigger impact than you think. Just think about how much longer a shirt lasts if it has been washed in the right way.

                End of life

                At this step, there is no way out and we have to find some way of discarding our product. How we discard a product will significantly influence the opportunity of reusing materials used.
