The Danish designer Camilla Gullits founded CARE BY ME in 2012. The brand creates beautiful and soft luxury products for women, men, and homeware without compromising on quality, design and in particular the employees' wellbeing and working conditions. CARE BY ME’s mission is to produce unique and sustainable products by combining competent craftsmanship from developing countries with design rooted in Nordic traditions, using only high-quality natural materials like cashmere, wool, silk and organic cotton. The Scandinavian, minimalist aesthetic provides space for the selected materials to come into their own, while at the same time adding a feeling of relaxed luxury to both home and wardrobe.

Their beautiful collection of luxurious, organic and sustainable clothing for men and women caters to everything – from the perfect and timeless cashmere sweater, a crisp organic shirt, to soft loungewear and comfortable nightwear. You can also find a great selection of decorative pillows, bedspreads, and handmade zero-waste rugs made from leftovers from their production. All CARE BY ME products are ethically made from the best natural materials such as Grade A-quality cashmere, GOTS-certified organic cotton, as well as wool, linen, and cashmere blends of the highest quality from Nepal.

One of their main goals is to make durable and timeless products that customers will use and love for years to come, while at the same time helping women in developing countries. The company focuses on helping and educating women on ways to secure their future, as they will be able to provide food for their families, ensure their children's schooling and create a safer and thus more harmonious life. Social responsibility, high quality and long-lasting design go hand in hand at CARE BY ME, which is why their products are both hand made and heart made.

Brand sustainability

CARE BY ME is created with the desire to help you as a consumer to make a more sustainable choice and integrate it into your everyday life, while aiding underprivileged women from Nepal and India to achieve a better life. They are proud of their Danish design heritage, and try to combine it with modern aesthetics, high-quality materials and old-school craftsmanship to create seasonless collections that elevate above fleeting trends. Elegant minimalism, functionality, qualitative design, and high values always permeate the fabric that defines this conscious brand.

Fair Working Conditions

CARE BY ME is a label striving to make a difference by supporting women from Nepal and India to thrive through employment. The brand operates an ethical manufacturing in both of these developing countries, giving local women training, skills, and knowledge of crafts that can secure them a better future. CARE BY ME believes that the new luxury is full of love for people and our beautiful planet. Therefore, the reason why they opt for GOTS certified organic cotton is to ensure strict requirements for toxicity and biodegradability of textiles, and to meet social criteria regarding minimum wage, working hours, child labour, discrimination and more. Additionally, their use of Fairtrade certified cotton makes sure that strict social standards are also met in production and trading.

Heritage Production

CARE BY ME values the craftsmanship of each and every one of the countries they work with and wishes to preserve the old craft traditions handed down through generations. In Kathmandu, Nepal, several hundred years of handicraft tradition continue in their small workshops – knitting is done by hand with knitting needles or on old-fashioned manual knitting machines, and weaving is done both manually and semi-automatically. In India, on the other hand, the brand is partnering with a third-generation family business, with a manufacturing factory that’s both GOTS and Fairtrade certified.

Natural, Durable & Certified Materials

CARE BY ME stands for long-lasting Danish design made from local materials of the best possible quality. They work exclusively with grade-A cashmere – the most expensive, durable, and highest quality yarn made of the finest hairs from the Cashmere goat’s downy undercoat. For wool, linen and cashmere blends, they only choose the best natural materials from Nepal, where handmade textiles make up a large part of the national economy. CARE BY ME never uses synthetic materials unless they are recycled, making them a more sustainable and environmentally friendly option. The brand also collaborates with a Fairtrade manufacturer in Bolivia, where all Alpaca wool knitted accessories and interior pieces are produced.

Sustainable Harvesting

When they use cotton, it must be gauze, cotton poplin or spun cotton – and most importantly, it must be GOTS certified. All their organic cotton is produced in India by their GOTS and Fairtrade certified partner. Organic fibres are grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers or potentially toxic pesticides. By promoting soil fertility, organic farmers help to embed carbon in the soil, which helps to counteract climate change. At the same time, it reduces the use of toxic pesticides that harm nature and wildlife.

Reduced Waste, Energy & Pollution in Production

A selection of their silk, wool and cashmere products are created in Kathmandu, Nepal, where CARE BY ME focuses mainly on social and economic sustainability within production. The scarcity of electricity in the Kathmandu Valley means that the products are produced either by hand, or on old-fashioned manual knitting machines, and the woven products are either made on a hand weave or a semi-automatic weave. The only electricity used is to assemble the parts, as all the products from Nepal are certified handmade. Moreover, their beautiful silk scarves are dyed in the open air, and their handmade zero-waste rugs are woven from production waste.

Reduced Use of Chemicals & Toxins in Production

CARE BY ME’s organic cotton series is produced in India by a GOTS certified manufacturer – a textile production certification that focuses on both people and the environment. It’s internationally recognized as the toughest organic textile standard because it goes far beyond verifying the organic farming process to include every step of manufacturing. By limiting the use of toxic bleaches, dyes and other chemical inputs during the production process of textiles, it safeguards the health of farmers and local communities in cotton-growing areas.

Brand Ethos

CARE BY ME is a Danish brand that creates beautiful clothes and interiors based on timeless design, high-quality materials and responsible production. The love of nature, the unique craftsmanship and Danish design heritage is the essence of their entire way of thinking and the basis for the sustainable journey their founder Camilla Gullits embarked on in 2012. Their desire to be a sustainable brand in both the social and environmental aspects has been at the heart of CARE BY ME from the very beginning. They are dedicated to support small communities through inspiring design and valuable production processes, and to help women in Nepal and India to achieve a higher quality of life.

Sustainable highlights on brand level

Product Lifecycle

The Design Phase is a crucial part of determining a product’s sustainable capabilities. We’ve chosen to highlight a few genius steps that enable a sustainable product right from the beginning.

    Material & Material Extraction

The materials used for a certain product and how these materials come to life are of crucial importance to the sustainable capabilities we seek in products.

      Transportation of Materials

This step relates to the transportation of the raw materials from when they are first obtained (harvested etc.) to the production site. Obviously, the closer to the production site, the better.

Obviously, the production of a certain product has an impact on the overall level of sustainability. Luckily, many manufacturers have now taken steps towards more sustainable production methods.

How a brand chooses to package its products will have a significant influence of the carbon impact from packaging and transportation.

This step relates to the distribution of products when they have been produced. Obviously, the closer to the brand’s warehouse, the better.

How you choose to use and take care of a product has a bigger impact than you think. Just think about how much longer a shirt lasts if it has been washed in the right way.

                End of life

At this step, there is no way out and we have to find some way of discarding our product. How we discard a product will significantly influence the opportunity of reusing materials used.
