In 2012, the Danish couple and founders of Made by Mama, Anna and Morten, seized the opportunity and replaced a hectic life with a peaceful hillside in beautiful Tuscany, Italy. With a shared passion for gastronomy and several years working with the development of their own olive oil and other delicacies, Made by Mama became a reality in 2018.
Freshly squeezed organic olive oil, the finest truffles from San Miniato, and cutting boards from hand-carved olive wood – they brought the best tangible quality of Italy and combined it with a simple Nordic design. Made by Mama is all about love and passion for good food, quality and originality in concept, and respect for Italian craftsmanship.
Made by Mama only sells products they have produced themselves, or that are made by manufacturers they know and can vouch for, and who share the same passion for raw ingredients as them. Furthermore, for every product you find at Made by Mama, there is a unique story behind, which is why most products are only available in limited quantities.
A gift from Made by Mama is not just delicious gourmet food – it’s an experience that brings every meal together. With an uncompromising approach to the quality of their products, Made by Mama might not be able to change the world we live in, but they can sure help make it a little cozier.
Made by Mama is a passion project and tribute to the best that Italy has to offer, and symbolizes what is at the heart of their business – that there is a person behind it all – in this case a Mama! For more than 5 years, they have handpicked and developed the very best specialty products with a focus on uncompromising quality and Italian passion, and it is their mission to bring the same values directly to their customers' homes.
Made by Mama have spent years developing their products and finding the most talented manufacturers, while taking us on a taste-tour of Italy. The company knows the people who have slung the honey, harvested the olives, turned the cheeses, and braided the baskets – and with great pride details the story and history of each of their supplier and small producer. With special stories behind the products, recipes that can inspire, and delicious organic ingredients, Made by Mama’s gift packages are well thought-out to create a great experience and sensorial memory for any recipient.
Sustainable Harvesting & Local, Organic Ingredients
Olive oil is Made by Mama’s first true passion and the product from which everything started. Their cold-pressed extra virgin organic olive oil is in a class of its own. Made from 100% naturally grown olives from their olive groves in Tuscany, they’re harvested by hand and developed in collaboration with olive oil specialist, Lars Gehrig. The brand’s pasta, on the other hand, is produced in Naples’ unique microclimate, which provides the right amount of sun, wind and humidity to make the best pasta. Pasta di Gragnano is a trademark and stamp of quality that ensures that the pasta is made from premium Gragnano wheat and low-calcium water from Monti Lattari. None of their other products contain preservatives, additives or palm oil, and most are 100% organic.
Heritage Production in Country of Origin
The company is proud to work with regional, family-owned producers that share their passion for making the highest quality Italian food accessible to everyone. Their long-time collaborators include, among others, renowned third generation coffee roasters from Tuscany, who process their specially selected beans according to old Italian traditions, and the Malpighi family, who has been producing balsamic vinegar in Modena since 1850 – the fifth generation that continues the family's proud traditions. It is the uncompromising approach to ingredients and their gastronomic expertise of these carefully chosen heritage farmers, roasters, and pasta makers that provide this high quality of Made by Mama products.
Made by Mama carries their love of olives all through their kitchen utensils, using olive wood to make their cutting boards, spatulas, cheese knives, and pepper grinders. Olive wood not only has a nice structure, but it’s also a type of wood with a fantastic shelf-life and antibacterial properties, which makes it suitable for food. The wood lies and matures for several years before being taken under manual treatment. Their handmade pieces are incredibly durable, absorb almost no odours or stains, and are completely unique as no two pieces of wood are alike.
Reduced Waste After Use
Their coffee capsules are all biodegradable, compostable, and climate-neutral! Produced from corn-starch, sugar cane, plant fibres and other renewable raw materials for solar, wind and water energy, their unique composition means that they can be used in the compost or disposed of with residual waste. This environmentally friendly capsule manages to preserve the rich aroma and taste of coffee optimally for more than a year, using an extremely effective oxygen barrier.
Made by Mama brings the flavour of the Italian homeland right to your table! Their catalogue boasts a wide selection of organic Italian ingredients from small local artisans – from pasta, condiments, aged cheeses, sauces and much more – and all their products come with a guarantee of quality and excellence. Are you in search of a special gift or have to attend a dinner and don't know what to bring? Their gift baskets are both original and fail proof!
The Design Phase is a crucial part of determining a product’s sustainable capabilities. We’ve chosen to highlight a few genius steps that enable a sustainable product right from the beginning.
The materials used for a certain product and how these materials come to life are of crucial importance to the sustainable capabilities we seek in products.
This step relates to the transportation of the raw materials from when they are first obtained (harvested etc.) to the production site. Obviously, the closer to the production site, the better.
Obviously, the production of a certain product has an impact on the overall level of sustainability. Luckily, many manufacturers have now taken steps towards more sustainable production methods.
How a brand chooses to package its products will have a significant influence of the carbon impact from packaging and transportation.
This step relates to the distribution of products when they have been produced. Obviously, the closer to the brand’s warehouse, the better.
How you choose to use and take care of a product has a bigger impact than you think. Just think about how much longer a shirt lasts if it has been washed in the right way.
At this step, there is no way out and we have to find some way of discarding our product. How we discard a product will significantly influence the opportunity of reusing materials used.
