Sekan Studio was founded in 2021 and was born from the idea of creating sustainable products for the home that are designed to create comfort and well-being and not least are made to last. The world does not need more, it needs better. Sekan is passionate about timeless and sustainable textiles - textiles that you want and can use for many years to come and last longer than just a single season.
Sekan products are produced in Portugal at a family-owned factory based in Braga. The factory has documentation of their fair working conditions.
Materials
From the start, Sekan Studio has chosen to commit to using 100% organic cotton. By maintaining the health of our soil, it contributes to an improved ecosystem assisted by farmers using natural farming processes. Organic cotton provides a better life for the people who grow it - and the people who sleep in it. Besides that, organic cotton uses 90% less water and involves no toxic chemicals.
All Sekan products are GOTS and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified.
GOTS
All Sekan products are organically certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). GOTS is the leading and best certification for ecologically and socially responsible practices that cover all processes in the supply chain. This is your guarantee that the product is both completely organic - from harvest to finished product. And at the same time that it is ethically responsible produced under proper working conditions for those who produce the textiles - such as ventilation, breaks, collective agreements, no use of harmful chemicals, minimum wage, etc.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100
All Sekan products carry the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification. This certification ensures that every little component, including thread and buttons, is tested for harmful substances, and that the products are also harmless to your health and well-being. There are many different criteria, all of which are tested by independent partner institutes. In the test, they take into account several regulated and unregulated substances that can be harmful to human health. New requirements are constantly being added and the criteria are being tested on an ongoing basis. They are constantly working to create the purest product.
1% for the Planet
Every time you invest in a Sekan product, we automatically donate 1% of our revenue to a number of non-profit organizations dedicated to protecting the ecosystems and wildlife of our planet.
Sekan Studio creates original products that make you feel comfortable and form the framework for moments filled with calm and earthiness. All products are made from 100% GOTS certified organic cotton and are OEKO-TEX certified.
Brands receive this certification either on brand level or in relation to the Product Life Cycle as depicted in the Comarché Framework. GOTS is a global standard for organic fibers. It covers the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading, and distribution of all textiles made from at least 70% certified organic natural fibers. The textiles must meet a certain set of environmental standards (toxicity, wastewater, etc.) as well as social criteria in accordance with the International Labor Organization. There are a number of different certifying bodies that can actually award certification, but all of them use the same standards.
OEKO-TEX is an international association that tests for harmful substances in the various stages of textile production. It has two certification labels; the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and the Oeko-Tex Standard 1000.
The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is a global uniform testing and certification system for textile raw materials, intermediate and end products at all stages of production. Therefore, STANDARD 100 can be considered both a global health and environmental certificate
The Oeko-Tex Standard 1000 is a testing, auditing and certification system for environmentally friendly production sites throughout the textile processing chain.
This indicates that the brand has actively sought out Fair Working Conditions for the producers of its product(s).
This indicates that the brand gives back to society in some shape or form. The particular initiative will be listed when describing the brand in the brand section.
The Design Phase is a crucial part of determining a product’s sustainable capabilities. We’ve chosen to highlight a few genius steps that enable a sustainable product right from the beginning.
The materials used for a certain product and how these materials come to life are of crucial importance to the sustainable capabilities we seek in products.
This step relates to the transportation of the raw materials from when they are first obtained (harvested etc.) to the production site. Obviously, the closer to the production site, the better.
Obviously, the production of a certain product has an impact on the overall level of sustainability. Luckily, many manufacturers have now taken steps towards more sustainable production methods.
How a brand chooses to package its products will have a significant influence of the carbon impact from packaging and transportation.
This step relates to the distribution of products when they have been produced. Obviously, the closer to the brand’s warehouse, the better.
How you choose to use and take care of a product has a bigger impact than you think. Just think about how much longer a shirt lasts if it has been washed in the right way.
At this step, there is no way out and we have to find some way of discarding our product. How we discard a product will significantly influence the opportunity of reusing materials used.
