UHMM started with a family trip to Vietnam and a look into the impressive yet ordinary local practices of its people. Line Schack, the founder of UHMM, saw how the locals used palm leaves both as plates and food storage. This was the inspiration that sparked the beginning of the Danish lunch box brand. Since January 2017, UHMM has created beautiful functional products that take inspiration from the century-old natural practices of using palm leaves as an essential kitchen item.
UHMM’s vision is to promote reusable and aesthetic food packaging that makes everyday life easier. By design, every lunchbox is multifunctional and can unfold to become completely flat so to either function as a plate or to occupy less space in the dishwasher or cabinet. It’s this ingenious design that Line and co-designer Anne Qvist want to inspire families to use to make their everyday life easier.
UHMM is made with the everyday, conscious family in mind. The multifunctional design of UHMM combines the age-old traditions of using palm leaves as a kitchen essential with the modern lunch box. Each box is dishwasher safe, recyclable and made from food grade polypropylene.
All UHMM boxes have been designed with the intent to promote responsible consumption and minimize the waste of single-use plastics. UHMM was founded with this reusable mindset at its core while seeking to provide an everyday food storage solution that would take up the absolute minimum amount of space in both dishwasher and kitchen drawer. Anne Qvist, the founder of UHMM Box, took this mindset a step further to include a prioritization of local collaboration and manufacturing in order to secure local partnerships and jobs.
The UHMM Box is made of polypropylene, a type of plastic that places less strain on the environment due to its production and recyclability. Polypropylene is fully recyclable and does not release any chemicals in the recycling process. The durability and non-toxic properties of the plastic makes it a good substitute to other plastics such as polyethylene and polycarbonate which have a significantly higher carbon footprint.
Another brilliant property of the UHMM Box is its food grade materials. The UHMM Box and its materials do not release any toxins or harmful chemicals into the environment nor into your food. It’s also true the other way around - the smell and colour of your food won’t transfer onto the coated material of the box.
For centuries, palm leaves have been used both to store food and function as plates. UHMM took this common practice to the design table and created an indispensable lunch box for all homes. The ingenious design is a multifunctional box that can be filled with packed lunches or leftovers, or it can unfold completely to work as a plate and take up the least amount of space possible. When done using, just throw it in the dishwasher and it’s ready for the next day. UHMM Box is made of food-grade polypropylene, which ensures that your food is stored safely without the threat of hazardous chemicals.
The Design Phase is a crucial part of determining a product’s sustainable capabilities. We’ve chosen to highlight a few genius steps that enable a sustainable product right from the beginning.
The materials used for a certain product and how these materials come to life are of crucial importance to the sustainable capabilities we seek in products.
This step relates to the transportation of the raw materials from when they are first obtained (harvested etc.) to the production site. Obviously, the closer to the production site, the better.
Obviously, the production of a certain product has an impact on the overall level of sustainability. Luckily, many manufacturers have now taken steps towards more sustainable production methods.
How a brand chooses to package its products will have a significant influence of the carbon impact from packaging and transportation.
This step relates to the distribution of products when they have been produced. Obviously, the closer to the brand’s warehouse, the better.
How you choose to use and take care of a product has a bigger impact than you think. Just think about how much longer a shirt lasts if it has been washed in the right way.
At this step, there is no way out and we have to find some way of discarding our product. How we discard a product will significantly influence the opportunity of reusing materials used.
