Mette Therkelsen Nyborg (later Doller) started her career as a ceramist in the 1940’s under the German occupation of Denmark. She began as an intern and took her education at the Gutte Eriksen’s Jyske Art Academy. Later, she would go on to further specialize herself as a ceramist and visual artist at the Royal Academy (at the time, Kunsthåndværkerskolen).
Post education, Mette traveled to Norway in 1945 where she worked in close relation with the appraised ceramic Jens von der Lippe and his wife Margrete Lund. In 1947, Mette married the artist Jens Doller. Together, they opened a studio outside Copenhagen which they ran together until 1949 where after they moved to Bornholm, an island just a couple hours by ferry from Copenhagen. In a town named Grisby on Bornholm, Mette and Jens took over a small studio from the sculptor, Eilert Jensen. The two had the studio until 1953 when a new owner, ceramist Ulla Dybeck, took over. At the same time, Mette Doller moved to Sweden to work as designer and ceramicist for Andersson & Johansson in Höganäs.
In 1955, Mette returned to Bornholm where she and Jens ran a ceramics studio in Svaneke until 1964. In 1965, Mette and Jens Doller moved to Ærø where they continued their work as artists and ceramists. Mette would give form and decorate while Jens would glaze and burn the pieces they created. Jens Doller passed away in 2000. In 2004, Mette took her maiden name. In 2015, when Mette Nyborg was 90 years old she published her book “90 – Et liv, mange liv – min lange rejse i drømme” which translates to “90 – one life, many lives – my long journey in the dream”.
